History

On April 6, 1907, twenty-two Baptists met together with David Blanton of Amarillo, whom they elected as their moderator pro tem. They constituted themselves "The First Baptist Church of Pampa, Texas" and they proceeded formally to unite the church, eleven by letter and eleven by promise of letter. The church still has complete records of that meeting. Those present in addition to Rev. David Blanton were: Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Barrett, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Edgar, Mrs. M.S. Keahey, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Sewell, Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Barrett, Mrs. E.V. Henry, Mrs. Alice Henry, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Barrett, Mr. and Mrs. B.A. Davidson, Mr. and Mrs. Y.W. Payne, Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Roberts, Mrs. Mattie Williams, Mrs. Gertrude Talbott, and Mr. W.R. Isabell.

On September 8, 1907, the church called J.W. Whatley as quarter-time pastor. In 1908 the church purchased some lots for future construction of a place of worship. These lots were probably located where the Combs-Worley Building is now.

In 1929 a church building was constructed on the corner of Kingsmill and West Streets still the church's current location. In October of 1949, an educational building was completed. In 1961 the church constructed a three story facility commonly referred to as the "West Educational Building." Then on the evening of December 23, 1973 the auditorium, offices, classrooms, choir room, parlor, library, and basement were destroyed by fire. Under the capable leadership of the pastor and staff the membership rallied magnificently from the disaster and a new sanctuary was dedicated on October 31, 1976.

As of November 2009, the church is currently engaged in a campaign "Experience the Joy" to raise funds for several necessary maintenance issues as well as remodeling a few key areas of the church. Fifteen pastors have served First Baptist over the past 100+ years in four different buildings.
